Delaware Launches Innovative Literacy Program to Empower Young Readers

In Wilmington, an engaging event showcased the importance of fostering reading skills among young students. On Thursday, second-grade pupils participated in a countdown ceremony to unveil a collection of donated books, educational games, and multimedia resources. These materials will be distributed to libraries across Delaware as well as youth correctional facilities. The initiative is part of a broader literacy campaign supported by Mrs. Wordsmith, a company dedicated to enhancing literacy through creative methods. This program, known as WRITING CHANGE, has received backing from the Estée Lauder Companies Foundation and draws inspiration from youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman.

The event highlighted the collaborative efforts between various stakeholders in promoting literacy. Dr. Annie Norman, Director of the Delaware Division of Libraries, emphasized the role of libraries as key partners in the Delaware Literacy Alliance. This alliance aims to enhance literacy at all stages of life, focusing not just on addressing low literacy but also on cultivating super-readers. By improving literacy rates, the initiative seeks to provide better opportunities for individuals to achieve their personal goals within Delaware.

Wilmington Mayor John Carney, who previously served as Governor, underscored the importance of ensuring that all children in Delaware can read proficiently by the third grade. He noted that this goal remains a top priority, regardless of where children reside within the state. Brandon Cardet-Hernandez, President of Mrs. Wordsmith, shared insights into the company's approach to developing educational tools. With a background as a teacher and principal, he explained that Mrs. Wordsmith focuses on creating interactive and enjoyable materials that teach essential reading skills such as vocabulary and phonics. The company collaborates closely with young people during the design process, ensuring that the products resonate with their intended audience.

The launch of this literacy program marks a significant step towards empowering young readers in Delaware.
