"Documentary Shows Video Games' Remarkable Impact"
12/11/2024
It's that special time of the year when "Best of" lists seem to pop up everywhere. We have lists for the best books, albums, and movies. I've often considered creating my own list to share with others, but my memory fails me miserably. I can barely recall everything I've read, listened to, or watched in 2024.
Discovering an Unforgettable Film
Among the countless films, there is one that has etched itself indelibly in my mind. It is a documentary available on Netflix titled "The Remarkable Life of Ibelin." This film tells the story of a young man in Norway who was born with a degenerative and fatal disorder called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. From his early childhood until his untimely death at the age of 25, his physical capabilities deteriorated to such an extent that he could only move his fingers. And even that required special equipment. Yet, he persevered. He maintained a blog called "Musings of Life" and indulged in video games, with World of Warcraft being his favorite. 1: The circumstances surrounding this young man's life are truly heartbreaking. To witness someone lose their physical abilities at such a young age and yet find a way to continue living and expressing themselves is truly remarkable. His blog became a window into his world, allowing us to connect with him on a deeper level. 2: The fact that he chose to spend a significant portion of his life playing video games is a testament to the power of these digital realms. It shows that even in the face of great adversity, people can find solace and a sense of purpose. The Impact of Video Games
1: As someone with a preference for romantic comedies and a skeptic of video games, I initially found it strange that I ended up watching this documentary. I have long held the view that video games do not contribute positively to society and may even have a negative impact. However, the story of Mats Steen changed my perspective. 2: Mats spent around 20,000 hours playing World of Warcraft during his short life. At his funeral, his father expressed their sorrow that their son had not experienced love, made friends, or made a valuable contribution to society. But they were wrong. After news of his passing was posted on his blog, tributes began pouring in. People shared how much they loved and respected Mats, how kind and generous he was, and how he had helped them and many others. All because of a video game. The Virtual World as a Haven
1: In the make-believe animated universe of World of Warcraft, Mats Steen, known as Lord Ibelin Redmoore, the nobleman and private investigator, had the physical prowess of Superman. In this virtual world, his handicap did not matter. He could run, fish, eat ice cream, hug, kiss, and give a woman flowers. He could offer advice and support to others, helping them through their struggles while keeping his own real-life battle a secret. 2: His level of compassion is a lesson that we should all strive to follow. It shows that in the digital realm, we have the opportunity to create a different kind of life, one where our limitations do not hold us back. The Dark Side of Gaming
1: While the film focuses on the positive aspects of World of Warcraft and avoids highlighting its negative sides, it is important to be aware that there are indeed minefields in the gaming world. Gaming can become an addiction, affecting sleep, grades, and time spent outdoors. 2: Additionally, cybercrime and bullying are on the rise in these games. We need to be vigilant and ensure that our gaming experiences are safe and positive. 1: Despite the potential drawbacks, I was deeply moved by Mats Steen's story. I sobbed throughout the entire film, realizing that no romantic comedy had ever touched me as deeply. This documentary transformed me, opening my mind to the invaluable and life-changing impact that video games can have. 2: It has made me realize that we should not be quick to judge or dismiss something based on our preconceived notions. Each medium has the potential to bring out the best in us and make a positive difference in the world. If I had a "Best of 2024" list, "The Remarkable Life of Ibelin" would undoubtedly be at the top. I hope that you will take the time to watch this film and be inspired by Mats Steen's story.Beth M. Howard is an author and filmmaker based in Donnellson, Iowa.
