The Impact of Gambling Elements in Video Games on Teenagers
Uncovering the Link between Video Game Gambling and Real-Life Behavior
Gaming and Gambling Mechanics
In video games, we often find mechanics like prize wheels that offer special in-game equipment or treasure chests. These elements, whether paid or free, include loot boxes - surprise packages with random game items. Casino-style games and gambling-themed videos by streamers or influencers also contribute to the integration of gambling mechanics. For example, a popular action game might have a daily spin wheel where players can win rare weapons. This gives them a taste of the excitement associated with gambling, even within the game context.
Another aspect is how these mechanics can subtly influence a player's behavior. Over time, the repeated exposure to such elements can make players more accustomed to the idea of taking risks and seeking rewards. This psychological conditioning might carry over into their real lives, making them more prone to engage in gambling activities.
Tracking Gaming Habits and Gambling Behavior
In a three-year study involving 2,300 young people aged 12 to 17, researchers closely monitored their gaming habits. Each round of the study focused on a subset of 500 participants. It was found that over 80 per cent of the respondents were regular gamers, and an astonishing 60 per cent reported participating in gambling activities within the past year, despite the legal prohibition for minors in Belgium. Common gambling activities among them included betting with friends (35 per cent) and playing scratch cards (33 per cent).
This data clearly shows the prevalence of gambling behavior among young gamers. It highlights the need for a closer look at how these games are affecting the lives of teenagers and what measures can be taken to address the issue.
The Progression and Influencing Factors
The study revealed a distinct progression. Exposure to simulated gambling in video games led to an increase in participants' intention to gamble and their likelihood of engaging in real gambling behavior a year later. Professor Rozane De Cock of KU Leuven explains, "The effect went in that direction, not the other way around. Young people exposed to gambling mechanics in video games during the first round of research were more likely to exhibit gambling behavior later on."
In addition to the games themselves, influencers and streamers on platforms like Twitch and Kick also play a significant role. They often use flashing images and attractive music while discussing loot boxes, constantly exposing young people to these gambling elements. This dual exposure - inside and outside the gaming environment - compounds the problem. As De Cock adds, "Even though only a small percentage of young people exhibit problematic gambling behavior, it's dangerous to open the gate."
Addressing the Risks
To combat these risks, Professor De Cock proposes a multi-pronged approach. Firstly, the gaming industry must assume more responsibility for the content it provides. They should ensure that gambling elements are not overly emphasized or integrated in a way that could harm young players. Secondly, existing legislation needs to be strictly enforced. Currently, loot boxes are technically banned in Belgium, but some young people can bypass these restrictions using tools like VPNs. Stricter enforcement will help prevent such bypasses.
Finally, parental involvement is crucial. As De Cock emphasizes, "We encourage parents to talk to their children about gaming and gambling and to set boundaries. Banning online games outright isn't the solution. The online gaming community is crucial for young people to feel connected to others." By having open conversations with their children and setting appropriate limits, parents can play a significant role in protecting their teenagers from the negative impacts of gambling in video games.
