The Last of Us Season Two: A New Chapter with Kaitlyn Dever's Abby
One of the most eagerly awaited television events of 2025 is the return of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. This series, starring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, has captivated audiences worldwide. Discussions surrounding the second season have been handled delicately to avoid spoiling the storyline for those who haven’t played The Last of Us Part II. However, one key detail cannot be overlooked: the addition of Kaitlyn Dever to the cast as Abby. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin shed light on this casting choice, emphasizing the importance of performance over physical resemblance.
Dever’s involvement with The Last of Us dates back to when the game was being considered for a film adaptation. At that time, she participated in an early table read, which left a lasting impression on Druckmann. He mentioned staying in touch with her over the years. When discussions for season two began, the idea of casting Dever as Abby emerged. “Kaitlyn’s exceptional acting abilities were the primary reason for her selection,” Druckmann explained. “We prioritize talent above all else.”
The character of Abby presents a unique challenge for Dever. Unlike the game version, where Abby is portrayed by Laura Bailey, Dever brings her own interpretation to the role. The showrunners are aware of the potential backlash regarding differences between "game Abby" and "show Abby," particularly concerning Dever’s smaller stature. Druckmann clarified that while there will still be action sequences, the focus will be more on the dramatic aspects of Abby’s story. “It’s about exploring the complexity of human nature,” he said. “Heroes and villains aren’t always clear-cut.”
Mazin added that Dever’s portrayal of Abby might appear physically more vulnerable but possesses a stronger spirit. “This raises questions about the source of her resilience and how it manifests,” he noted. These elements will be explored throughout the season, offering viewers a deeper understanding of Abby’s character.
Audiences can look forward to seeing Kaitlyn Dever bring a fresh perspective to Abby when The Last of Us returns to HBO and Max in April. The new season promises to delve into the complexities of its characters, providing fans with an emotionally rich narrative that diverges from yet respects the original game.
