Microsoft Faces Challenges Following Activision Blizzard Acquisition

01/16/2025

The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft has not met the anticipated growth milestones, revealing a series of unexpected hurdles. Initially, it was hoped that this strategic move would significantly boost Microsoft's Game Pass subscriptions. However, data from the past year shows that revenue growth in Microsoft’s gaming division increased by only 5.8%, falling short of the projected 11%. This discrepancy suggests that the integration and synergy between the two companies have not yet materialized as planned. Moreover, some top-tier game developers have reportedly been hesitant to partner with Microsoft on Game Pass, citing concerns over the compensation offered for featuring their titles.

Another area where Microsoft aimed to leverage the acquisition was in attracting game studios to its Azure cloud services. The expectation was that Activision’s development teams would transition to using Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. Contrary to these expectations, Activision continues to rely on its own servers as well as those provided by competitors like Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services. This reluctance to adopt Azure indicates a broader challenge for Microsoft in convincing the industry to switch to its cloud offerings. Despite these setbacks, the deal finalized in October 2023 after nearly two years of legal negotiations, bringing iconic franchises such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, and Candy Crush under Microsoft’s umbrella.

The road ahead for Microsoft in the gaming industry requires innovative strategies to fully capitalize on the potential of its new acquisitions. To achieve this, the company must address the concerns of developers and find ways to enhance the value proposition of both Game Pass and Azure. By fostering stronger partnerships and demonstrating the benefits of collaboration, Microsoft can turn these challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation. Ultimately, the success of this acquisition will depend on Microsoft’s ability to adapt and lead in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
