Microsoft's Struggles with MSFS 2024: Ongoing Stability/Crashing Issues

11/21/2024
Microsoft's MSFS 2024 faced a troubled launch that has only worsened with time. The team behind the simulator has been working hard to address the severe stability and crashing issues. Despite adding more server capacity to improve player accessibility, these issues still persist for some players.

Microsoft's MSFS 2024 - A Launch Filled with Challenges

Initial Troubled Launch

Two days ago on launch day, the vast majority of players couldn't play MSFS 2024. Some even couldn't install the game at all, making it one of the worst game launches in history. Microsoft neglected to share pre-launch codes with reviewers, preventing a thorough review at launch. This lack of preparation led to a chaotic start for the game, with players unable to enjoy the intended gaming experience. It was a significant setback for Microsoft and the MSFS 2024 team.

Server Capacity Increase and Accessibility

In an effort to improve the situation, the team added more server capacity. This has led to more players being able to access the sim, which is a positive step. However, it is not a permanent fix, as access issues still continue.Microsoft's intention to provide a better gaming experience through increased server capacity is evident, but they still have a long way to go to ensure that all players can enjoy the game without any accessibility issues.

Backend Overload and Game Issues

It turns out that Microsoft only tested the game's servers with 200,000 simulated users before launch. This was clearly not enough, as the backend was instantly overwhelmed on launch day and the days after. The overwhelmed backend services are responsible for virtually all game accessibility problems and the vast majority of game stability issues. The mission service database is completely maxed out, resulting in many users being unable to fly missions in-game. Default planes are also missing from the user's libraries.Microsoft is working hard to stop these issues entirely, but they have not provided a roadmap or a deadline for when full game functionality will be restored to all players. This has left players in a state of uncertainty, waiting for updates and hoping for a resolution. We will continue to monitor for more updates from the Microsoft team and follow up as necessary. In the meantime, players can only hope for a speedy resolution to these ongoing issues.Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox.
