Navy Service Member Wins Super Bowl Trip Through Video Game Tournament

A USO Madden video game tournament has granted a special opportunity to Kristopher Houchins, a Navy service member and graduate of Fort Dorchester High School. This weekend, Houchins will attend the Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans after clinching tickets as the tournament champion. For Houchins, this achievement signifies much more than just a gaming win; it represents a moment of joy and respite from his demanding naval duties. Recently returned from deployment, he often finds solace in playing video games or spending time with his young child.

Stationed in Hawaii as a Boatswain’s Mate Second Class, Houchins has served in the Navy for over a decade, focusing on ship maintenance and safety equipment. His journey began shortly after high school, and since then, he has dedicated himself to military service. The Madden NFL 25 tournament held in November at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, brought together military members from all six branches. Houchins credits his success to patience and consistency, noting that these qualities helped him secure the top prize. Interestingly, switching teams in the tournament played a pivotal role in his victory. Despite being a lifelong fan of the Indianapolis Colts, he cheered for the Eagles during the Super Bowl, the team that brought him this memorable experience.

This trip is not only a highlight of Houchins' career but also an occasion to share with his best friend, Trever Arstad, another Fort Dorchester High School alumnus. Together, they have enjoyed many hours of playing Madden and watching football. Houchins expresses gratitude to his supporters back home in Charleston, acknowledging their unwavering support.
