At the Indiana University Indianapolis campus, a dedicated team of professors and students are on a mission to safeguard these digital relics, ensuring that the rich history of gaming remains accessible to future generations.

Bridging the Generational Divide
The story of two IU Indianapolis students who had never experienced the iconic "Super Mario Bros." game serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving classic gaming. When professor Matthew Powers halted his lecture to introduce these students to the beloved title, the resulting emotional response underscored the power of these timeless experiences. "There wasn't a dry eye in the house," Powers recounted, highlighting the profound impact that classic games can have on those who encounter them for the first time.Alarming Rates of Disappearance
According to a study conducted by the Video Game History Foundation, a staggering 87% of all classic video games released in the United States are no longer available to play. This startling statistic underscores the urgent need for preservation efforts, as these cultural artifacts risk being lost to the sands of time. The IU Indianapolis video game preservation lab, part of the Media Arts Research and Learning Arcade Lab, has been at the forefront of this battle, amassing a collection of classic games for the past 18 years.Preserving the Past, Educating the Future
The Media Arts Research and Learning Arcade Lab's status as an official museum facility underscores its commitment to preserving and sharing these gaming treasures. "We're a museum facility, and we're not doing this for profit," Powers emphasized. "We're doing this for preservation for students to learn in class." By providing a hands-on learning environment, the lab allows students to delve into the history and design of classic games, fostering a deeper appreciation for the medium's evolution.Navigating the Legal Landscape
The preservation of classic video games is not without its challenges, as the lab must navigate the complex web of copyright laws. "The biggest roadblock is copyright law," explained Frank Cifaldi, founder of the Video Game History Foundation. "We're all going to die before any video games of note are in the public domain because of U.S. copyright law." This legal hurdle requires the lab to own a physical copy of each game in order to legally format it for digital preservation, a process that can be arduous and time-consuming.The Passion Behind the Preservation
Despite the obstacles, the IU Indianapolis video game preservation lab is driven by a deep passion for its mission. "There's a lot of passion around the project and a lot of people who are very excited," said lab assistant Haven Hamelin. "It's a sanctuary for us kind of weirdos." This dedication extends beyond the lab's walls, as the team seeks to engage with donors and launch initiatives to further their preservation efforts, including scholarships and internships.A Beacon of Hope in the Gaming Landscape
As the IU Indianapolis video game preservation lab continues its vital work, it stands as a beacon of hope in the gaming landscape. "Our ship has just landed on the beach, and we're trying to figure out who is doing what," Powers said, reflecting the lab's determination to lead the charge in preserving the rich history of video games. Through their tireless efforts, these passionate individuals are ensuring that the timeless treasures of gaming will be safeguarded for generations to come.Recommend News
