Revolutionizing the Gaming Industry: A New Era for Workers
Empowering Tomorrow's Creators Today
In an era where innovation meets creativity, ensuring that those behind the scenes receive their due recognition has never been more crucial. The formation of this union signifies not just solidarity but also a commitment to reshaping how the gaming industry operates from the ground up.
Origins of Change
This monumental effort builds upon the momentum generated after the 2018 Game Developers Conference. That event catalyzed the establishment of Game Workers Unite, a global grassroots initiative fostering labor organization throughout the industry. Coinciding with CODE-CWA's fifth anniversary—a campaign credited with assisting over 6,500 tech and gaming employees to join unions—the timing could not be more opportune.
Tom Smith, CWA’s Senior Director of Organizing, emphasized the collaborative nature of this achievement. "This union represents the collective efforts of countless gaming professionals striving to redefine unity and reclaim influence within a lucrative yet demanding field," he remarked. Their determination underscores the significance of uniting voices to advocate for meaningful change.
Facing Industry Challenges Head-On
Despite its rapid expansion, the gaming sector grapples with significant challenges, notably widespread layoffs. In 2023 alone, over 10,500 positions vanished, followed by an additional 14,600 losses in 2024. According to the GDC 2025 State of the Game Industry report, approximately 10% of surveyed developers experienced redundancy last year. Furthermore, numerous studios have ceased operations entirely, impacting even major entities like Microsoft and Sony Interactive Entertainment.
To counteract these trends, UVW-CWA members are actively collecting signatures for a petition promoting respect and stability for all gaming personnel. This initiative seeks to restore dignity to those affected by dismissals while advocating for systemic improvements benefiting everyone involved in crafting today's digital experiences.
A Mission Rooted in Empowerment
The mission statement of UVW-CWA articulates a vision of reclamation and empowerment. It calls for restoring agency to workers who often feel undervalued or overlooked. By extending support to freelancers, contractors, and laid-off individuals, the union aims to foster inclusivity and resilience within the community.
"Our objective is clear: construct an industry that prioritizes its creators' well-being and invests in long-term success rather than fleeting gains," stated a representative. This approach emphasizes sustainability, acknowledging that the talent driving these projects deserves recognition and resources necessary for sustained growth.
Pioneering Pre-Majority Unionism
UVW-CWA adopts a direct-join organizing model, also known as pre-majority unionism. This method allows diverse groups of workers—including freelancers and those recently unemployed—to collaborate effectively without facing typical employer-imposed hurdles during conventional certification processes. Consequently, addressing shared concerns becomes feasible across multiple studios simultaneously.
Claude Cummings Jr., President of CWA, highlighted the importance of this strategy. "As consolidation continues among video game companies, it is imperative that we empower the very individuals responsible for bringing these beloved games to life," he noted. Through this framework, UVW-CWA welcomes participation from various segments of the gaming workforce, including indie developers and those already engaged in workplace organization efforts.
Looking Forward Together
For video game professionals eager to contribute to this transformative movement, membership opportunities abound. Interested parties can apply directly via designated channels. Staying informed about ongoing developments remains essential; thus, following UVW-CWA on social media platforms such as Bluesky, X, and Instagram ensures access to timely updates and further involvement possibilities.
Beyond individual actions, aligning with broader networks amplifies impact. CODE-CWA exemplifies such collaboration, representing a coalition of worker-organizers dedicated to enhancing conditions within the tech, gaming, and digital sectors. Similarly, CWA stands steadfastly alongside workers across numerous industries, championing justice both professionally and communally.
