Seattle University's Esports Room: A Thriving Hub for Gaming and Community

02/20/2025

Upon entering Seattle University’s Esports Room, visitors are greeted by an atmosphere brimming with laughter and camaraderie. This vibrant community space has quickly become a favorite spot for students to engage in virtual games and socialize. Since its opening in February 2023, the Esports Room has been fostering an inclusive environment where gamers of all skill levels can come together and enjoy their shared passion.

Mordi Giday, a fourth-year finance major and staff member at the Esports Room, emphasizes that this space is open to everyone, regardless of gaming experience. Many students remain unaware of this dedicated area, which offers not only a place to play but also a welcoming community. Staff members like Giday ensure that newcomers feel comfortable by providing guidance and sharing tips to help them get started. The room serves as a bridge between casual and competitive gaming, making it accessible to all who wish to join in on the fun.

The Esports Room operates under the university’s UREC center and maintains close ties with the Esports and Gaming Club (EGC), the largest student-run organization on campus. Professor Chris Paul, advisor to EGC, highlights the significance of having such a communal space. Before the Esports Room was established, students played from their dorms, missing out on the opportunity to connect with others in person. Now, they have a dedicated venue where they can gather, interact, and build meaningful relationships through shared gaming experiences.

Building confidence in new environments can be challenging, especially when venturing into unfamiliar territory alone. Paul advises bringing a friend along to ease the transition. Having a companion can make the experience less daunting and more enjoyable. Over time, this support can empower individuals to explore the Esports Room independently and even forge new friendships within the community.

Elyza Cabanos, a second-year forensic science major and event coordinator for EGC, encourages students to embrace the Esports Room without hesitation. She emphasizes that fear should not be a barrier to joining in on the fun. By participating in events and engaging with others, students can gain confidence and form lasting connections. Ultimately, the Esports Room is more than just a place to play games; it is a welcoming space where friendships flourish and communities thrive.
