Affordable Upgrades for Zelda Fans: Nintendo's Pricing Strategy for Switch 2

04/07/2025

Nintendo has announced a cost-effective solution for players who already own certain titles, allowing them to upgrade their games for the new Switch 2 at a fraction of the usual price. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, are available for just $10 as upgrades if you already possess these games on the original console. This pricing strategy aims to ease the financial burden on fans while encouraging them to transition to the latest hardware.

Bill Trinen, VP of product and player experience at Nintendo of America, clarified the company’s approach in an interview with IGN. According to him, the base prices for these titles on the Switch 2 stand at $69.99 for Breath of the Wild and $79.99 for Tears of the Kingdom. However, those who already own these games can access the upgrades for $9.99 each. Moreover, subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service receive these upgrades as part of their membership benefits. While Trinen did not specify whether digital copies would be cheaper than physical ones, he did highlight that the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour game will also be available for $9.99, sparking debates about its inclusion as a bundled feature.

Despite these strategic moves, the conversation around pricing may soon shift focus from games to the console itself. With pre-orders beginning in other regions, American consumers remain uncertain about the final cost of the Switch 2 due to potential tariff impacts. As discussions continue, Nintendo's efforts to make upgrades accessible reflect a commitment to maintaining player loyalty and fostering community engagement. By prioritizing affordability and inclusivity, Nintendo sets an example for other gaming companies, showing that customer satisfaction can coexist with business growth.
