Revolutionizing Game Discovery: Ludocene Aims to Combat Video Game Overload

In the bustling world of digital entertainment, the video game industry faces a peculiar challenge. Each month, countless titles flood platforms like Steam, often leading to overlooked gems amidst an overwhelming selection. This phenomenon has become increasingly pronounced in recent years. Yet, what if the solution to this abundance paradox lies in adding just one more game? Enter Ludocene, a novel recommendation engine that aims to bridge the gap between players and hidden treasures within the gaming universe.

A New Approach to Discovering Hidden Gems

In the heart of this innovative era, designer Andy Robertson introduced Ludocene, a unique blend of dating apps, deck-building games, and personalized recommendations. Last week, ahead of its Kickstarter launch, Robertson provided an exclusive tour of the prototype. The app presents users with individual "video game cards," each showcasing trailers, genre information, and brief descriptions. Users can swipe up to discard or swipe down to add games to their favorites deck. As users curate their preferred collection, Ludocene generates secondary recommendations based on these selections.

During my exploration, I created a deck featuring titles such as Nier Automata, Kentucky Route Zero, and A Short Hike. The app then suggested lesser-known but highly-rated games like Jusant, Lil Gator Game, and A Walk with Yiayia. The latter, despite being available since 2022, has garnered fewer than 100 reviews on Steam, highlighting how even exceptional games can remain under the radar. Through Ludocene's card-swiping mechanism, these hidden gems have a better chance of finding their audience.

The developers are aware of the potential pitfalls of algorithmic recommendations and have incorporated a human touch. The "Expert" feature allows users to include established critics, journalists, and designers into their decks, merging algorithmic suggestions with expert opinions to create a more diverse and curated experience. During my demo, I even crafted my own recommendation card, which may appear in future versions of the app.

Ludocene launched its Kickstarter campaign this Tuesday, aiming to secure funding for its development. If successful, this tool could significantly enhance the discovery process, ensuring that quality games receive the attention they deserve.
